Ready to leave shift work behind without leaving healthcare? You’ve spent years building your clinical knowledge, assessment skills and professional judgement. But what if you could put those skills to use in a different way — with structured Monday–Friday hours, hybrid working and no traditional clinical shifts?

We’re recruiting for PIP Disability Assessors in Weston-super-Mare, offering healthcare professionals the opportunity to take their clinical careers in a new direction while continuing to make a meaningful difference to people’s lives.
Working as a Functional Assessor with Serco’s Health Assessment Advisory Service, you’ll carry out assessments on behalf of the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP), helping establish how an individual’s health conditions or disabilities affect their daily living and mobility.
You’ll use your clinical expertise, communication skills and professional judgement to gather information, review evidence and produce accurate, factual assessment reports.

No previous Functional Assessor experience is required. Comprehensive training and ongoing clinical support are provided.

What’s in It for You?

  • Salary: £40,000 increasing to £41,000 after 6 months then £42,000 after 12 months (depending on postcode)
  • Location: Weston-super-Mare
  • Full-time and part-time opportunities
  • Monday–Friday working pattern
  • Hybrid working, combining home and clinic-based assessments
  • Quality-related bonus opportunities following successful approval
  • 25 days annual leave plus bank holidays for full-time employees
  • Option to purchase up to five additional days of annual leave
  • Up to 6% employer-matched pension contribution
  • Annual professional registration fees covered
  • Four dedicated CPD days per year
  • One-to-one clinical coaching and professional development
  • Employee discounts across leisure, retail, hospitality and more
  • Access to wellbeing support, including an Employee Assistance Programme
  • Opportunities to develop into roles such as Clinical Coach, Clinical Trainer, Clinical Author or Clinical Standards Auditor

A different way to use your clinical expertise. This is an opportunity to move away from traditional hands-on care while continuing to use the knowledge and skills you’ve worked hard to develop.
As a PIP Disability Assessor, you’ll focus on understanding how a person’s condition affects their everyday functioning.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting structured functional assessments by telephone, face-to-face or online, depending on the assessment
  • Reviewing customer information and medical evidence ahead of assessments
  • Gathering relevant clinical and functional information through consultation
  • Exploring how physical, sensory, mental health and cognitive conditions affect daily living and mobility
  • Applying clinical reasoning and critical analysis to the evidence available
  • Producing clear, accurate and objective reports to a high standard
  • Communicating with empathy, sensitivity and respect throughout the assessment process

You’ll help ensure customers have a safe and comfortable experience while providing factual reports that support the DWP’s decision-making process.
This is not a treatment or diagnostic role. You won’t be responsible for diagnosing conditions, providing medical advice or making the final decision on benefit entitlement. Your role is to assess the available evidence and provide an impartial report.

To be considered, you’ll need:

  • An appropriate professional qualification and active, full registration without conditions or restrictions
  • Registration with the relevant body: NMC, HCPC or GPhC, depending on your profession
  • At least 12 months of relevant post-registration clinical experience in the UK
  • Strong communication, listening and clinical reasoning skills
  • Confidence reviewing information and producing detailed written reports
  • Good IT skills and the ability to work with digital systems
  • A professional, empathetic and customer-focused approach
  • The ability to work independently, manage deadlines and maintain quality standards
  • A commitment to training, feedback and continued professional development

Eligible professions:

  • Registered Nurses (RGN, RMN and RNLD)
  • Occupational Therapists
  • Physiotherapists
  • Paramedics
  • Pharmacists

Full UK right to work is required. Sponsorship is not available.

Is This the Career Change You’ve Been Looking For? This opportunity could suit you if you’re ready to:

  • Move away from nights, weekends and unpredictable shift patterns
  • Use your clinical knowledge without delivering hands-on treatment
  • Develop your assessment, analytical and report-writing skills
  • Work in a structured environment with clear processes and quality standards
  • Continue developing professionally with dedicated coaching and funded CPD
  • Build a long-term career with opportunities for progression

Please bear in mind that this role involves detailed report writing, computer-based work, structured assessments and working to service and quality standards. It may not suit those who prefer exclusively hands-on clinical care or are looking for a fully remote position.

If you’re ready for a role that combines your healthcare experience with structured working, professional development and the opportunity to make a difference, this could be your next step.
